What is your current job?   RoadToMyMBA: Hi, Im a 26 year old financial consultant from Brazil. I have a BA degree in international relations from a private university here in my city and Ive also studied economics for 3 years in another university but did not obtain this second bachelor’s degree since Ive put my registration as on-hold. I currently work for a Big 4 consulting firm in the corporate finance area. I work with valuation, MA and long-term fundraising projects with companies of various sizes throughout Brazil. Ive been working here for about 4 years and right now Im a Senior Consultant. Accepted: Where do you plan on applying to b-school?   RoadToMyMBA: Im planning to apply exclusively to US MBA programs and right now Im narrowing my choices, but they are between Tuck, Stern, Darden, Fuqua, McCombs, Kenan-Flagler and Kelley. I know its a lot of options but its a hard decision, especially for me that cant travel to the campus and to the best MBA events in USA. Im doing my best to make the right choice. I did my first GMAT test two weeks ago and scored a low 560. Right now Im back to studies since Im planning to retake the GMAT in mid-November. Accepted: Do you plan on staying in your current industry post-MBA, or changing to a new field/career?   RoadToMyMBA: I would like to change my career to work in the financial sector, such as investment banking or private equity more precisely. Since I work as a corporate finance consultant, the change will not be very hard. At least that is what I think Accepted: Why did you decide to blog about your experience? What have you gained from the experience? So what does this have to do with your GMAT score? One of the most common study mistakes that test-takers make is that they study skills as individual, standalone entities, and dont look for the subtle ways that the GMAT testmaker can layer in those sophisticated Andre-3000-style combinations. Consider an example of an important GMAT skill, the Difference of Squares rule that (x + y)(x y) = x^2 y^2. A standard (think early 1980s Sugarhill Gang or Grandmaster Flash) GMAT question might test it in a relatively obvious way: What is the value of (x + y)? (1) x^2 y^2 = 0 (2) x does not equal y Here if you factor Statement 1 youll get (x + y)(x y) = 0, and then Statement 2 tells you that its not (x y) that equals zero, so it must be x + y. This Data Sufficiency answer is C, and the test is essentially just rewarding you for knowing the Difference of Squares. The GMAT it cares bout the Difference of Squares When theres squares and subtraction Put this rule into action A slightly more sophisticated question (think late 1980s/early 1990s Rob Bass or Run DMC) wont so obviously show you the Difference of Squares. It might hide that behind a square that  few  people tend to see as a square, the number 1: If y = 2^(16) 1, the greatest prime factor of y is: (A) Less than 6 (B) Between 6 and 10 (C) Between 10 and 14 (D) Between 14 and 18 (E) Greater than 18 Here, many people dont recognize 1 as a perfect square, so they dont see that the setup is 2^(16) 1^(2), which  can be factored as: (2^8 + 1)(2^8 1) And that 2^8 1 can be factored again, since 1 remains 1^2: (2^8 + 1)(2^4 + 1)(2^4 1) And that ultimately you could do it again with 2^4 1 if you wanted, but you should know that 2^4 is 16 so you can now get to work on smaller numbers. 2^8 is 256 and 2^4 is 16, so you have: 257 * 17 * 15 And what really happens now is that you have to factor out 257 to see if you can break it into anything smaller than 17 as a factor (since, if not, you can select greater than 18). Since you cant, you know that 257 must have a prime factor greater than 18 (it turns out that its prime) and correctly select E. The lesson here? This problem directly tests the Difference of Squares (you dont want to try to calculate 2^16, then subtract 1, then try to factor out that massive number) but it does so more subtly, layering it inside the obvious prime factor problem like a rapper might embed a secondary rhyme scheme in the middle of each bar. But in really hard problems, the testmaker goes full-on Greatest of All Time rapper, testing several things at the same time and rewarding only the really astute for recognizing the game being played. Adrienne Richs Rape Essay Have you ever been in a situation where you had something horrible happen in your life that you needed to do something about, but in order to do something about it, you had to confront the problem and that caused you pain and more troubles? I believe that to be the underlying conflict in Adrienne Richs Rape. The main character who the speaker is talking to first is a woman who has been sexually violated. She is a victim of a heinous and very private, embarrassing crime. The officer that she has reported her situation to is a policeman who patrols her area and who her family knows and trust. Her family is very close to this officer, for he comes from your block, grew up with your brothers.2 She doesnt know him that well though, which makes her telling him about the incident that much more painful and uncomfortable. She gives him all the details of the crime and about her assailant. She has the idea that the cop may have been her rapist. The woman has a certain bit of suspicion about the officer, but she is not sure. Rape is a poem about a woman who is reporting a case of rape to a policeman who may just be the criminal responsible for the offense himself. The violated woman isnt convinced that the policeman is the rapist, but the speaker defiantly suspects him. The rape victim knows very little about the criminal in question, so the speaker tells the reader about the incident, the evidence, and about enough facts to let them come up with there own suspect. The first statement made by the speaker is There is a cop who is both prowler and father.1 When he says prowler the reader automatically considers the officer to be a suspect, even before any background is given on him. This is a very important line in the poem. It expresses that the policeman is both a prowler and a father figure. He is suppose to be an ally against crime and problems on his beat. The role of a policeman is to protect the innocent from criminals and evils. But who protects you when officers of the law are corrupt and are involved in unlawful actions? There is also another line in this paragraph that the reader could interpret to be incriminating. The speaker says the You hardly know him in his boots and silver badge, on horseback, one hand touching his gun.4-5 Since she doesnt know him that well anyway, maybe instead of seeing him as an officer of the law, she sees him as her assailant. The middle few stanza get a little more confusing. The second stanza tells of how intimidating and powerful the policeman is. The third stanza is where the woman takes her problems and concerns to the officer. The forth stanza is quite intriguing. It starts off with a description the cops eyes, a very soothing image. Its the last verse of  this stanza that takes a turn of suspicion against the officer. The thought of the the hysteria in your voice pleases him best20 makes the reader believe that he is the rapist, a person who would enjoy such a thing. The last stanza contains some good closing thoughts. It is also interesting because it sounds like the speaker changes who he is addressing. This is obvious in the first line of this stanza when the speaker says He has access to the machinery that could get you put away.26 The woman wouldnt get put away, for she hasnt done anything wrong. The speaker is now talking to the rapist. Believing in yourself, is another very important theme in the story, Marc was condoned by his tenants and his subordinates but he kept believing in his knowledge and one day the breakthrough came and it changed his life and perception for the better, similarly it is a lesson for all those who get negative in life. Staying positive has always helped other people and it is also the key to success, Marc found solace by finding accommodating people, his new neighbors were also very kind-hearted and cared for him unlike his former neighbors who never respected his existence. Review of Research Paper on Metastasis of Cancerous Tumors

Introduction Early diagnosis provides the best hope many have in beating cancer. Unfortunately, this is not the end of the fight for many cancer patients. Primary tumors may be successfully treated early, only to later discover they have metastasized to other areas of the body. The common medical definition of metastasis is: The spread of cancer from one part of the body to another. Tumors formed from cells that have spread are called â€Å"secondary tumors† and contain cells that are like those in the original (primary) tumor. This definition could be the reason why early treatment of a primary tumor is ineffective against metastatic tumor cells. As the definition suggests, the accepted model for the metastasis of tumor cells is through clonal evolution, where secondary tumors have similar genomes to the primary tumor. Recent studies suggest, however, that this may not be accurate. Significant divergence between primary and secondary tumors in renal cell metastases and breast metastases has been discovered in recent studies. An alternative model, one of a parallel evolution, would explain why therapies aimed at primary tumors are unsuccessful against metastatic cells. Further research on this alternative model could lead to therapies that not only target the properties of the primary tumor but also those of the secondary tumor and save many from the burden of fighting cancer again. Methods This study took 386 breast cancer patients and split them into two groups. M0, patients showing cells with no metastasis, and M1 patients, those that showed metastasis and performed a genomic analysis, or comparative genomic hybridization (CGH) of the Cytokeratin... ... tumor cells that could potentially disseminate, mutate, change, and grow into another tumor. More emphasis needs to be put on the development of disseminated cells because the changes in their growth cannot be reflected by the genomic data obtained from the primary tumor data; as a result, they can not be dealt with in the same manner. The main idea of this study is to underscore: "the need to validate potential cellular targets for adjuvant and systemic therapies on disseminated cancer cells directly"( Cancer Cell: July 2003).
